Deported from the US, Punjab Woman Seeks Government Help to Return to the UK
The 104 illegal immigrants were deported to India by a US military plane, among whom a twenty-one-year-old woman from Punjab’s Ludhiana district said all she wanted was to fly back to the UK so she could return to her college in London. Her family had taken a loan of 15 lakh to send her to the UK in May 2024. She relocated to the US on Jan 1 due to a lack of clarity on immigration rules and was deported back to India. Her family is still confused about the reason behind the deportation of Muskan.
Muskan opened up to the media and stated, “I went to the UK on a study visa in January 2024 to study business. During vacations, I decided to go to Mexico on January 25 this year. From there, I crossed the Tijuana border into the US. There were around 50 people, the majority of them women from all parts of the world. As we crossed the border, a bus took us to the camp, where we stayed for 10 days. I think the cameras get the information about who crosses the border, as I did not see any security personnel at the Tijuana border. Once in the US, the security personnel took our bags and mobile phones, and we wore the outfits they gave us.”.
She added, “They were very polite. Until the time we were in the camp, we were not told that they intended to deport us. We were made comfortable. On January 3, they asked us to be ready as we would be taken to another border to be released. For three days, we were on a US military plane; it stopped at some place that we did not know. The plane crew was also considerate. Though we were chained and in handcuffs, we were allowed to eat comfortably. When we got to know on the plane that we were on our way to Amritsar, we felt bad as we did not wish to come back to India in this manner.”
Muskan, in an interview with The Indian Express, stated, “We never intended to enter the US illegally. We legally traveled to Mexico and did not attempt to cross the border by jumping across the wall or any other illegal way. We were at the Tijuana border when the police stopped us and said that soon, the US authorities would take us away. I still have a valid visa for the UK, so why have I been deported to India?”
Muskan’s father runs a roadside dhaba and is not financially stable. Just like other families who sent their kids to the US the illegal way, they have borrowed a loan of ₹15 lakh along with some small loans from relatives and friends to send me to the UK for studies. She hopes that the government will understand her and her family’s situation and will help her in returning to the UK to complete her studies.
Muskan is told that she would not be able to fly to the UK or anywhere else due to the deportation. Her two-year course is still pending. She and her father have humbly requested the government to help them. Her father also expressed deep shock and said that he is relieved that she is back home safely, as they were not able to contact her for the last ten days.
Sarvjit Kaur Manuke, the MLA of Jagraon, has requested the government to help the woman travel back to the UK to complete her studies in London. Manuke said, “Her family is in debt. It is really important for her to complete her studies so that she can settle in life and help her family.”
