Mohali MC Issues Notice to Sector-67 Mall for Unauthorized Road Digging
The Mohali Municipal Corporation has issued a notice to the Sector 67 mall for digging the road behind the mall without permission. The issued notice directs the mall owners to repair the damaged road and footpath within three days or face consequences. The notice says that “due to road damage, commuters are facing problems. Moreover, the act has maligned the image of MC. You have violated the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act, 1976, and hence you are directed to repair the road within three days or face the action. A fine may be enforced on the mall authorities as per the MC Act, said a senior MC official.
The notice has been enforced to 80 building owners. The notices demand that owners offer the required clearances and No Objection Certificates (NOCs) within 15 days. If they fail to do so, it could result in the return of plots and the demolition of illegal structures.
The mayor of Mohali, Amarjeet Singh Sidhu, who is also known as Jeeti Sidhu, explained in a statement that the MC survey has unveiled 97 buildings that have been built as high rises in violation of regulations. The notices were issued to about 80 building owners, needing them to provide legal permissions and construction documents to the MC within 15 days. If they couldn’t do so, they would face the destruction of their structures. These notices were received directly by the offenders by the MC commissioner.
Moreover, the mayor gathered an emergency meeting concerning illegal shops in the village under the jurisdiction of MC. The MC commissioner, officials from the building branch, and fire department were present in the meeting. The meeting resulted in the issuance of the notices. In the meeting, Mayor Sidhu said that while three-story buildings are approved in the villages, there are many that have been constructed with more than three storeys, in breach of regulations.
He also stated that the building branch reported during the meeting that a survey is ongoing in all Mohali villages, and construction of buildings without approved plans has ceased. The MC’s engineering department is assessing the structural integrity of all buildings within the village red zones, and appropriate action will be taken against structurally compromised buildings based on the report. If not pointed out, the MC will carry out on their own, and all expenses will be recovered, and those violating the regulations will not be spared.
Umang Jindal, the owner of the mall, said, “The road was by mistake excavated due to some miscommunication with the team. We have fixed the road now.” A team of the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) had been to the location to examine the damage and determine the jurisdiction. After finding that the digging was done on the internal road of Sector-67, the authority informed MC officials for further action.
Due to the unauthorized buildings, many of them illegally constructed in areas that were specially designed for green spaces, the concerns for the environment have been brought to light. The local ecosystems and urban planning have been disturbed due to this unregulated expansion.
To reduce the problems regarding constructions, the MC has planned to adopt new technologies to keep an eye on construction activities in a better way. This can be done through drones and AI-driven systems. The MC believes that by these small steps and methods, the illegal construction can be prevented in real-time. Following the Sohana building collapse, the MC has issued notices to building owners for illegal high-rise constructions, demanding required documentation. In addition to issuing rules and regulations as usual, the MC is attempting to prevent environmental harm, improve monitoring, and ensure the security of every building in the city. This action represents a strong commitment to building a safer, more regulated Mohali.
