The Bharatiya Janata Party has achieved a victory in the Delhi assembly elections, ending its 27-year-long absence from power in the capital. The BJP has defeated the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and has crossed the majority vote mark. Swati herself hadn’t contested in the elections. She has been raising concerns about civic issues across Delhi over the past few months. She has highlighted issues such as garbage accumulation, waterlogged streets, and unhygienic living conditions. She exposed infrastructural shortcomings through the videos she documented and shared after visiting areas like Burari and Vikaspuri.
Swati Maliwal blamed Arvind Kejriwal and his corrupt actions for the defeat of their party in the elections. She stated, “Some people have started considering Punjab as their personal ATM,” and gave a warning to Kejriwal that he is going to lose Punjab like Delhi if the problems are not corrected immediately. Maliwal said, “Arvind Kejriwal has appointed his goon Bibhav Kumar as the chief advisor of Bhagwant Mann… Is the money looted from Punjab now coming to Delhi?”
Swati inquired about Kejriwal calling an urgent meeting of AAP legislators in Punjab, just after the Delhi drubbing. She said that Punjab legislators had been left “confused” and “angered” by this urgent call for a meeting, where many even thought that Kejriwal might be eyeing Punjab after his loss in Delhi. Maliwal told the news agency ANI, “As a result, there is a lot of anger among the people and MLAs of Punjab. When Punjab has given the mandate to Arvind Kejriwal, what has he done for Punjab?”
AAP MP Swati Maliwal blamed former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for the party’s loss in the assembly elections, calling him “arrogant.” Swati Maliwal said, “I feel that if a person gets extremely arrogant and stops working for the people, then people teach that man a lesson. That is exactly what has happened with Arvind Kejriwal. All of us have contributed so much to the party. We came with a vision that we would change Delhi…But unfortunately, we could not because of our leadership, who does not believe in internal democracy, who believes he can get away with anything by speaking any lie, by beating up people.” She added, “It is really unfortunate… The dreams of Delhi have been lost. We have suffered a huge defeat, but I blame Kejriwal for this.
Swati Maliwal criticized Arvind Kejriwal for the defeat and the poor development in Delhi. She said that, “If you see, in Delhi right now, and locality or colony… it is in shambles. There is no governance. The roads are broken, the drainage system is overflowing, there is filth and garbage on roads, and the water supply is polluted—there is either black water or yellow disgusting water or no water at all. Yamuna is extremely polluted and there’s air pollution. While all of this is going on, what does Arvind Kejriwal do? He creates a ‘Sheeshmahal’.”
Despite her feelings about the AAP and Kejriwal since the episode, Swati Maliwal has not left the party. She even compared Kejriwal with the mythological character of Ravana, saying that ego and pride don’t last long and even Ravana’s pride was shattered, but then again he is only Arvind Kejriwal. She highlighted that the main cause of the downfall of Kejriwal and the defeat of their party is because of the arrogance and pride of Kejriwal. She made a big statement in opposition to Kejriwal: “Today, Delhi has become a dustbin. It’s because of issues like water pollution, air pollution and the condition of the streets that Arvind Kejriwal himself has lost his seat.”
Maliwal congratulated BJP and said, “I congratulate the BJP. People have voted for them with hope—and they should work to fulfill that.”
